What is important to know for the first time buyer, and the buyer moving up-market, are the very basic requirements that are needed for a computer to operate properly or camera to take good pictures, what features, functions and capabilities are needed to run certain common applications most efficiently, and how to distinguish these from the simply "nice to have" and superfluous categories. Part#:(540-1501) Computer Course - (E) Good System HousekeepingIt may happen sooner, or later, but eventually like a new home a computer will begin to gather dust and include things that you don't really need around the place. The computer, unlike your home, will begin early on to provide indications that something is amiss - like more frequent hangups, cryptic, unexplained error messages, noisy operation, sluggish performance and other, more subtle ways. If you are connected on-line some of the reaons this is happening may be external and need to be dealt with under the heading of security. Most, however, are symptomatic of poor or indadequate housekeeping of your hardware and software that you can perform yourself. Good housekeeping habits, including how to do regular backups, are detailed in this session. Viruses, Worms, Spyware, Popups, Spam, Takeovers and other unwanted invasions of your personal computer privacy have spawned an entire industry devoted to the detection of, and protection from, such nuisances and the trouble and expense they can cause. "How much security is appropriate?" and "What measures can a user take to mitigate exposure and risk?" are a couple of the questions that are addressed during this session.

Whereas many of us are competent at operating individual systems, the evolution of the personal computer into a master unit controlling all sub-systems presents a new challenge that may make scheduling the taping of your favourite TV show seem like a trivial task.
